The structure of higher education in Dagestan is not so difficult to understand. After leaving school at the age of 17-18, young people choose a university or institute most suitable for them, as well as a faculty.

Then, students are expected to select certain subjects in which they will have to pass exams in order to enter the chosen faculty. Exams in mathematics and the Russian language are mandatory, they are required by all higher education institutions, as well as two other subjects depending on the faculty.

Then, after passing the exams successfully, school graduates finally become students.

In Dagestan, the most popular higher education institutions are Dagestan State University (DSU), Dagestan State Technical University (DSTU), Dagestan State Pedagogical University (DSPU), Dagestan State Medical University (DSMU).

After four years at university, students receive a bachelor degree. You can also continue your studies and undertake a master’s degree at the same or another university. A master’s degree, that is awarded in two years and entitles you to further postgraduate study.

Postgraduate study is a separate level of higher education in Russia. Its purpose is to prepare you for the degree of candidate of sciences. The degree is awarded to a postgraduate student after passing exams and defending a thesis. Postgraduate studies usually last for three or four years. There are two scholastic degrees in Russia: the primary one is a candidate of science and the higher one is a doctor of science.

Getting higher education is one of the main stages in your life. The main values are laid down and life goals are defined during your formal education.
