Every year the motto of the holiday changes depending on the current situation in the world. In the challenging year of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the motto was “Find Words for Peace in Crisis” (2020). This year, the day of the translator is held under the slogan United in translation.
For the Faculty of Foreign Languages of DGU, this holiday is significant, since the Faculty of Foreign Languages pays special attention to the development of students’ translation competencies. Since 2011 the faculty has had the Master’s program “Translation and Translation Studies”. The Interlingua translation research laboratory has existed since 2012. Students and undergraduates participate in translation competitions, translate fiction, scientific and technical literature, translate abstracts of scientific articles and also act as volunteer translators at various events within the republic and in other cities of Russia.
At present, all conditions for professional development are being created for students. The faculty has a well-equipped classroom (room 31), including equipment for synchronous translation.
Room 86 houses the Interlingua student laboratory, where future translators master their practical translation skills.
In 2021, Candidate of Philology, Senior Lecturer of the Department of English Philology, Head of the Student Translation Laboratory “Interlingua” Saidat Magomedovna Magomedova and Master’s student Rumina Kasimova joined the Union of Translators of Russia, at a meeting of which it was decided to create the Dagestan branch of the Union of Translators of Russia under the leadership of Zaira Abdulmalikovna Makhacheva, translator and the head of international cultural projects.
A number of projects are being carried out, in which teachers, undergraduates and undergraduate students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages are involved (see https://randykohan.com/).
